Bloom Where You Are Planted

ree

There’s a phrase I’ve carried with me for years: “Bloom where you are planted.”

When Michelle Obama said, "Grass is always green where it is watered", it truly resonated.

It’s simple, yet deeply powerful.

So often, we wait for the perfect circumstances before we allow ourselves to thrive. We think: Once I move to that city… once I get that job… once I have more time, more money, more support… then I’ll bloom.

But the truth is, growth doesn’t have to wait for the perfect environment. It happens because we choose to show up - right here, right now - with what we have.

My Story: The Turning Point

When I landed in Canada, the first two years felt like being caught in limbo.

As a family, we were constantly weighing the question: Do we stay here or go back?

It was exhausting, aimless, and confusing. I couldn’t focus fully on building a career, on creating connections, or even on embracing the present - because one foot was always in the “what if we leave” zone.

But then, as a family, we made a decision: We will stay. This is home.

And that’s when everything shifted. The moment my roots anchored, my energy became focused. Instead of scattering between two possibilities, I could finally channel myself into one. That clarity gave me direction, and from there, growth began.

Focusing Your Energy

When you bloom where you are planted, you stop scattering energy on what’s missing. Instead, you focus on what you do have: your skills, your relationships, your opportunities. This focus creates momentum. Small steps suddenly compound into bigger ones.

Planning Your Future Better

Thriving in the present helps you see the future more clearly. Instead of being blinded by lack or wishing for a “better garden,” you begin to plan from a place of abundance. You ask: What can I build from here? rather than When will something new come along?

Taking Bigger Steps

Rooting yourself in your current season doesn’t mean staying small. In fact, it’s the opposite. Strong roots allow for bold growth. The deeper you anchor, the higher you can rise.

Building Connection and Community

When you make the most of where you are, you naturally connect with others doing the same. Community forms not from waiting for ideal conditions, but from shared presence. And that community becomes the soil that nourishes your growth.

Creating Resilience

Blooming in less-than-perfect conditions strengthens you. You learn that storms don’t end you - they shape you. Each challenge becomes proof of your grit, a reminder that your environment does not define your potential.

Unlocking Creativity

When you lean into “here and now,” creativity blossoms. You see possibilities in the resources around you that you might have overlooked. You stop waiting for more and begin making magic with what you already hold.

Journal Prompts

Here are a few prompts to ground you when your focus starts drifting to what is missing.

  • What would blooming - right here, right now - look like in action for me this week?

  • What strengths, tools, or resources do I already have right now that I can maximize?

  • What is "missing" and what can I replace it with today?

Remember: The garden you dream of may be ahead, but the bloom begins here. Choose to thrive where you are planted, and you’ll find that the roots you grow today will carry you farther than you ever imagined.
