Breaking the Cycle: Why You’re Not Hitting Your Goals

Updated: Oct 6, 2025

We hear it all the time: “Set goals. Visualize them. Chase after them.” And so, when I was new to business, I did just that. I set big, shiny goals, imagined achieving them, and put all my energy into thinking about them.

But then—I didn’t hit the goals.

The cycle was disheartening. I would get excited, build myself up, and then feel crushed when I didn’t make it. After experiencing this repeated pattern, I decided to take a break from setting goals altogether. Yet, soon after, I noticed that without goals, I wasn’t growing either. It felt like I was stuck, not progressing, and watching others soar while I stood still.

Does this sound familiar?

This cycle can frustrate many business owners and entrepreneurs. It can leave you feeling like nothing works and like you’re not cut out for success. But here’s the truth: It’s not that you don’t have what it takes. In fact, if you’ve got the desire to run your own business, you already possess a key quality that can lead you to success.

What you might be missing are some critical tools and steps that can guide you toward achieving those goals you’ve been aiming for.

Let’s talk about what’s really needed to make goals happen.

The Real Secret to Hitting Your Goals

If you’ve been struggling to hit your goals, chances are that you’re not including all of the key pieces necessary to reach them. It’s not just about setting a goal or thinking positively about it. There are strategic steps that can turn your goals from wishful thinking into achievable milestones.

Here’s a breakdown of what you may be missing:

1. Clearly Define Your Goal

It’s easy to set vague or broad goals like “grow my business” or “make more money,” but without specifics, these goals are nearly impossible to measure. Instead, clearly define what you want to achieve.

Ask yourself: What exactly do I want?

Instead of “grow my business,” say, “I want to increase revenue by 20% over the next six months.” When you clearly define the goal, you’re giving yourself a tangible target to work toward.

2. Identify Why You Haven’t Reached It Yet

Reflecting on why you haven’t hit the goal before is crucial. If this is a goal you’ve set in the past, why didn’t it happen? Understanding the barriers you’ve faced, whether it’s a lack of time, resources, or strategy, will help you avoid the same pitfalls. Sometimes, the biggest barrier is feeling like there’s not enough time. For more on overcoming time scarcity, check out I Don’t Have Time—Or Do You?.

Ask yourself: What held me back last time?

Whether it was external challenges or internal resistance, identifying these issues will help you plan better this time around.

3. Solve for the Roadblocks

Once you’ve figured out why you didn’t hit the goal before, it’s time to solve those issues. If time management was the problem, how can you structure your days differently? If you lacked the skills, what learning opportunities are available?

Ask yourself: How can I remove or mitigate these roadblocks?

Proactively solving the reasons for past failures prepares you for success. Build with micro actions.

4. Create a Clear Path to Success

A goal without a plan is just a dream. Break your goal down into actionable steps. What do you need to do weekly or even daily to move closer to achieving your goal?

Ask yourself: What are the smaller tasks that will help me achieve this goal?

By breaking your goal into manageable steps, like I discuss in One Day at a Time: Embracing the Power of Small Steps, you’ll make the process less overwhelming but also increase your chances of success.

5. Have a Backup Plan

Roadblocks will happen. Maybe you’ll hit an unexpected challenge or a setback will occur. Having a contingency plan in place ensures that when things don’t go according to plan, you don’t give up on the goal altogether.

Ask yourself: What’s my Plan B?

Flexibility is key to staying on course when things get tough.

Additional Tools for Success

In addition to these steps, there are a few extra strategies you can adopt to supercharge your goal-setting:

6. Set Realistic Deadlines

Sometimes goals fail because the timeline is too aggressive. Set achievable deadlines that allow you to make consistent progress without burning out. Give yourself enough time to accomplish your objectives but not so much that you lose motivation. As pointed here, A basic problem is not realistically thinking through the effort required to achieve a goal from the outset and then the overwhelm drowns us.

7. Stay Accountable

Whether it’s sharing your goals with a mentor, joining a group, or keeping a journal, accountability is a powerful motivator. Having someone (or something) to check in with can make a significant difference in staying on track. Check out some amazing tips to keep yourself accountable.

The Bottom Line: Success Comes from Strategy, Not Just Desire

The frustration of not hitting your goals doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for success. It simply means you might need to rethink your approach. When you align your goals with a clear strategy—defining them, identifying roadblocks, planning for action, and creating contingency plans—you set yourself up for inevitable success.

Remember, it’s not about luck or waiting for the stars to align. Success is about being intentional, learning from your past, and having a system in place to support your ambitions. By incorporating these steps, you’ll no longer feel like goal-setting is a cycle of disappointment. Instead, it will become a pathway to growth and achievement.

It’s time to turn your dreams into reality. Set those goals, but this time, do it the right way. You’ve got this!
