Have you ever paused to reflect on the fact that the life you’re living now might be the answer to a prayer you once fervently prayed? Perhaps as a child, you dreamed of a loving family, a stable career, or simply the freedom to make choices for yourself. And now, here you are, holding in your hands the very things you once asked for.
But how often do we stop and really acknowledge that? In the busyness of life, we sometimes forget to see the connection between our past desires and our present blessings.
The Power of Gratitude
Gratitude is one of the most powerful practices we can incorporate into our daily lives. When we intentionally reflect on our blessings, we shift our focus from what’s missing to what’s already present. It’s easy to get caught up in the next goal or the next challenge, but taking a moment to acknowledge what you have—right now—grounds you in the richness of your current life. Gratitude helps you find hope and potential even in hardest of times.
Remember when you prayed for a steady job? For good health? For a loving relationship? Those were your deepest wishes at one time. And now, maybe without even realizing it, you are living those blessings. It’s important to count them.
Count Your Blessings
Here’s a simple exercise: Take five minutes today and write down the things in your life you once hoped or prayed for. Maybe it’s the home you live in now, the career you’ve built, or the personal growth you’ve experienced. As you write, you’ll start to see the beautiful connections between your past desires and your present reality.
It’s a practice that fills you with deep gratitude, reminding you that you’ve come a long way. The things you have now were once dreams, and acknowledging that can shift your perspective entirely. Gratitude becomes a lens through which you see everything, and suddenly, life feels a little lighter, a little brighter.
Feeling Blessed Beyond Measure
Sometimes, when I think of how much I’ve been given, I truly feel like I am God’s favorite child. Isn’t it funny? With so many children in the world - past and present, it is heartening that He manages to find and do things just for me. When you train yourself to see how your prayers have been answered, it feels as though the universe—or whatever higher power you believe in—has been working behind the scenes just for you. That sense of personal connection can fill your heart with joy and gratitude.
Training Yourself to See the Connections
It’s not always easy to recognize answered prayers or blessings when we’re in the thick of our daily routines. But when you start to train your mind to look for the connections, it becomes second nature. You realize that life isn’t random; it’s a series of events, decisions, and moments, some of which you’ve deeply wished for. And those moments are happening all around you.
- The car you drive might have been something you only dreamed of.
- The stability in your life might have once seemed impossible.
- The relationships you treasure today may have been something you longed for, feeling lonely at one time.
When you realize that the things you have today were once the things you yearned for, you can’t help but be filled with gratitude. Small acts like using a gratitude jar can shape your brain over time.
Take a Moment to Reflect Today
Gratitude isn’t just about being thankful for what you have now; it’s about recognizing that the life you live today is, in many ways, the result of the dreams and prayers of your past. As you go about your day today, take a moment to pause and reflect: What am I living today that I once prayed for?
Count the seeds you planted that you are harvesting today. Allow that sense of thankfulness to fill your heart. You are blessed. You are living an answered prayer. And once you recognize that, you’ll find more peace, more joy, and more grace in everything you do.
So today, take a deep breath and count your blessings. You’re living one of the prayers you used to pray.
Summing up...
Gratitude changes the way we see the world and reminds us of how far we’ve come. When we intentionally practice gratitude, it enriches our lives in ways we can’t even measure. Research shows that people with higher gratitude had a lower risk of mortality over several years.
Remember, you are blessed—in ways both big and small. So, take stock of the blessings in your life today. You might just realize that you’re living in the middle of one of your greatest dreams.
